Artist Statement:
“Mama of the Waters” honors the West African lwa (Diety), Yemayá, the mother of the sea, whose spirit endured the Atlantic crossing and lives on in diasporic traditions throughout the Americas. She embodies the divine feminine energy of creation, protection, and renewal—the same life-giving force that water represents. This piece pays homage to her as both nurturer and guardian, the spirit who guided and protected those forced across the ocean, and who continues to symbolize resilience, love, and the sacred continuity of ancestral power.
