What was left behind...
Mixed Media (Sand, Found Objects, Acrylic)
Artist Statement:
“What Was Left Behind” is a birdcage containing a feather lodged in sand, symbolizing the West African coast and the cultural practices, traditions, and potential lost to colonization and slavery. The feather represents what was forgotten, while rosaries spilling from the sculpture reflect Catholicism’s dual role as both oppression and a vessel for spiritual resilience. The bent cage and intentionally pried-open door signify that freedom was fought for, never given gracefully, and the burnt lace fabric embodies acts of resistance against European colonization and the reclaiming of autonomy
